Club Night

Steeple Morden Tennis Club - Club NightOn Monday evenings from 7pm the courts are dedicated to our Club night.

Club Night is a sociable and flexible activity, intended for members to meet up, chat and play - ladies, men and juniors all mix up to play doubles.

Some members turn up at 7pm and stay until late whilst others turn up for an hour or so in order to be able to get home for the kids or the football.... Our only end-stop is that our flood lights must be off at 10 p.m. – well the conservation area wildlife do need their sleep.

Sometimes during the year we also have Sunday Social sessions between 10am and noon, depending on whether any league matches need to use the courts.

Events

We are a very friendly club and we like to have and take part in fun events such as Sunday tournaments, which are very popular and which are usually arranged at short notice via email. We also host and participate in the annual NSPCC Ladies Doubles tournament – usually held in May or June. Players compete using our club facilities along with the facilities of other local clubs and also the tennis courts in the gardens of local residents in the surrounding villages. Everyone really enjoys the experience and of course the NSPCC charity benefits too.

Our evening social events normally take place in the local Village Hall which is located just a few metres from the courts. It has all the necessary facilities for self-catering and even a stage. In October 2015, the Tennis Club's annual fundraiser was another hugely successful quiz night devised and conducted by David and Karen Brown. Ten teams competed, searching their memories for key historical moments, their taste buds for baby food ingredients and their musical appreciation to identify famous intros played live by Peter Rigling. Many thanks to all those who participated and, most of all, to David, Karen and Peter. Close on £400 was raised for club funds which will go towards further club house facilities.

We’ve also hosted a Casino night (shown in the photo) which gave the members a good excuse to don their black cocktail dresses and tuxedos.  The evening was so compelling, the night just seemed to vanish – a little bit like most peoples’ playing chips. A great fundraiser for the Club.

Our most recent event was a Race Night which saw members and friends all racing wooden horses to the accompaniment of much encouragement and hilarity.  Betting was brisk and everybody enjoyed a delicious home cooked supper (donated by the committee), a licensed bar and free raffle!  The event raised £855 which will go towards the new court lighting.
